Effect is a book about the difference between what you said and what the other person heard. The difference between your intention and the effect that you have on the other person. And about how to handle that difference.
Psychologists and sisters Bente-Marie and Heidi Ihlen have been working with teambuilding and communication for several years, and Johann Olav Koss, fourfold olympic gold medal winner has practiced their theories on the speed skating rink. Johann is also the founder of Right to Play, non-govt. organisation aiding children and based in Toronto, Canada.

This is both an interesting and a valuable book. In dealing with inter-personal communication, it focuses very effectively on the barriers to communication between individuals and explains how our tendency to make assumptions about the way others think and feel can lead us into difficuties when we fail to understand the effect of what we say to them. A little understanding can go a long way! I now completely understand the old saying about listening to one's "gut feeling"; this book very effectively explains the clear division between one's head and one's gut. The authors use good examples to contextualize their meaning and everything seems devastatingly simple and obvious once you have read this book. I only wish I had been able to access this book during my career as a manager in education, it would have helped me enormously in my relationships with work colleagues and led to more harmonious team-working. The same could also be said about personal and family relationships. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is genuinely interested in developing a greater understanding of others' needs, whether in work or the home.

Effect edition by Johann Olav Koss Heidi Ihlen Bente Marie Ihlen Ken Lawley Kari Sørlie Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I remember the first time I read this book, when I got to the last page I just started from page 1 again and read it one more time.It was that important.
It was in the original language of Norwegian as a printed book that I read it.I have later bought maybe 30 copies of this and given as gifts to Norwegian speaking friends, but now finally it is available in English.
This is a book who has the power to let you find ways and will to change your life to the better. Actually the 2 Ihlen sisters helped the co-writer of this book,Johann Olav Koss, to win several gold medals at the Olympic games.
My own field is classical music where I am a violinist playing as soloist with orchestras around the world.
Among all the things you can learn from this book,is the ability to focus your thoughts, which is extremely important in so many fields of life.Even if you feel only 2 percent of your mind is positive, you can learn to focus on this tiny bit of your mind so it takes power over the negative feelings and your confidence grows.
This book also let you know the effect of your actions and way of behaving which might have much less to do with your intentions than you think.
After reading this book,I started thinking about conflicts and arguments I had had in my past, and suddenly I started to see them in a whole new light. I could understand now why things had happened which had puzzled me for years, but more importantly I could act differently and get much improved results the next times I was in similar situations.

So is this book really that helpful? YES
Is it the most important book I have ever read? YES
Could it change the way you look upon the World ? YES
Does it comfort you in situations were you feel like a victim? NO
Can it make you believe that you can always choose not to be a victim? YES
Does it make your life easy and a dance on roses? COME ON,OF COURSE NOT.
Can it help you change your mind about what you can manage and achieve in your life, also things you are sure know you are incapable of doing? ABSOLUTELY )
Can it give you inspiration and power to fight for important things you had almost given up on? YES INDEED !!
Would I recommend this to a friend ? Actually I would like to give away this to even the most unfriendly person I could find on Earth, dramatically increasing the chances of actually becoming friends with that person as a result. If you want to be friends with someone,or bring that friendship to the next level, even betterbuy this book for yourself !!! .
Have I exaggerated in this review? NO,NOT REALLY. I have read this book 6-7 times and will read it many more times. I tried to give it 10 stars.
This is a unique book. It's not the sort of book that I normally read but being interested in organisational behaviour and team dynamics I decided to try it. Its great strength is that it is able to convey psychological conceps in everyday language that a layman can readily understand. The insight I gained into communication (or lack of!) between individuals was very enlightening. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that human diversity means that our individual needs will vary. The central point of the book is that one should ask people about their needs rather than make assumptions. It's a devastatingly simple point but one which many of us can easily ignore. The rewards of applying the guidance in the book can be found in improved relationships at home with family and at work with colleagues. In an era where a large proportion of working relationships occur within teams of colleagues this can result in improved team dynamics and improved performance.

Whether you're interested in family and personal relationships or work relationships or both I would highly recommend this book to you.
